Pop Vitamin C Tablets, Get a Kidney Stone
Vitamin supplements are popular items these days. Vitamin C is particularly popular in the winter, when people pop tablets at the first sign of a cold. However, data indicates that vitamin C doesn’t actually prevent colds, but long-term use may slightly reduce the severity or duration of a cold when you do catch one. So, should we all start popping vitamin C tablets every day? Probably not. A new study in JAMA Internal Medicine showed that men who took 1,000-mg tablets of vitamin C were twice as likely to develop kidney stones as men who did not take vitamin C supplements. (See chart below.) The effect was not observed for men who took multivitamins.

Tennessee police confuse Buckeye logo with pot icon

Jonas-Boggioni said she hadn’t been speeding so she wondered why police were pulling her over. “They were very serious,” she said. “They had the body armor and the guns.” One of the officers asked her, “What are you doing with a marijuana sticker on your bumper?” Jonas-Boggioni, a longtime Buckeyes fan who grew up in Columbus — and is president of the Ohio State Alumni Club in the Dallas-Fort Worth area — told the officer what the decal actually represents but she said he didn’t seem to get it. “He looked at me like I was speaking a foreign language,” she said. Jonas-Boggioni’s husband, Guido, 66, got out of the car to show the police his sweatshirt — an item from Ohio State’s 2002 national-championship season, sporting a Buckeye leaf. One of the officers said someone outside his jurisdiction had seen the logo on Jonas-Boggiono’s car and thought it might mean the car was carrying pot, the Dispatch said. “It’s just amazing they would be that dumb,” said.

Did God Rods Cause A US Space Weapon,  Not Meteors, To Hit Russia And Cuba?

God Rods are the ultimate bunker busters, which strike with Luciferian power despite their name, which came no doubt from the apocalyptic corps of evangelical graduates of the Air Force Academy. To prepare a God Rod assault on Iran’s hardened nuclear bunkers, the USAF dual-chamber orbital ship would be positioned into a slower near-geostationary orbit over the Caspian Sea. The Rods from God are depleted uranium rods sheathed in a ceramic foam shell, which prevents friction-caused searing vaporization during re-entry. The DU rods rely on kinetic energy from gravity acceleration reaching supersonic speeds along a close-to vertical trajectory. Upon impact with the Earth’s surface, the ceramic shell is shattered into powder, while the DU becomes a red-hot searing liquid fire that burns through rock and concrete. Turning into dust and gas, the depleted uranium will ignite the air inside any bunker or tunnel, creating shock waves that cause the roof to cave in.

Chevy Chase landlord used tiny cameras to peep on tenants

It was an article in Cosmopolitan magazine about hidden cameras, according to the woman’s attorney, that got her thinking about the smoke alarm inside her Chevy Chase apartment — the one over her bed, the one allegedly put there by her landlord. She and her boyfriend examined the device. What they found, police say, started an investigation that has the landlord facing a March 4 trial in Montgomery County District Court on charges of secretly recording three tenants while they were nude or engaged in intimate acts with their boyfriends.

Fish Get Stoned, Too

Human anti-anxiety meds are making fish tweak out, according to a study published in the latest issue of Science. No, this has nothing to do with the small, but dedicated group of pet-owners who try to blow pot smoke into their animals’ faces (or bowls). On a larger scale, researchers have shown that highly-medicated humans and farms are regularly dosing fish through treated wastewater in rivers and streams, and with everything from antidepressants to estrogen. This paper, however, shows that fish respond in a very curious way to benzodiazepines, a class of drugs that includes meds like Klonopin, Xanax, and Valium, and one of the most popularly prescribed and abused drug types in the world.

New Video Game Perversely Portrays Dorner as Hero

In the wake of quadruple-murder suspect Christopher Dorner’s death in a cabin near Big Bear, some are perversely making him out to be some sort of larger-than-life mythical folk figure. And now, the latest twist: there’s a new video game featuring the vengeful cop-killer as a hero. The video game is called ‘Chris Dorner’s Last Stand: A True American Hero.’ The on-line community that created the game is named 4-Chan. In the shoot-’em-up style game, the player plays as if he were Dorner, and the goal — dripping with anti-law enforcement sentiment — is to shoot and kill police officers. Play in the game begins with Dorner in a secluded cabin, which features a portrait of Charlie Sheen on the wall. Dorner is armed with an assault rifle. Arnold Schwarzenegger is inserted into the game as one of Dorner’s enemies. In addition to the violence, the game is rife with racist overtones. Critics of the game are describing it as sick and anti-American.

Euthanize a Cat At Home

In the event that it is impossible to find a vet who is willing to come to the owner’s home to euthanize it or the owner cannot afford it, American Veterinary Association, known as the AVMA for short, recommends carbon dioxide as the only method that pet owners can use safely at home. Carbon dioxide is heavier than air and virtually odorless. At concentrations of 7.5 percent it acts as an analgesic while a 30 to 40 percent concentration can serve as an anesthetic. High concentrations at 80 percent or more can cause a quick death. However, it is not a painless one, so the individual who is performing the euthanasia must start with a small concentration to induce an analgesic, then gradually increase the concentration until it turns into an anesthetic effect. Once the animal is unconscious, it is safe to increase the concentration to end its life without causing it further pain. The AVMA has approved the use of carbon dioxide for small animals.

Sea slug’s ‘disposable penis’ surprises

Sea slugs are not the only animals who abandon their penis. Orb weaving spiders are known to lose their male organs after sex, as does a sea creature called the periwinkle and land slugs belonging to the genus Ariolimax. However the researchers believe that Chromodoris reticulata is the first creature known that can re-grow its appendage – and its disposable penis gives it a sexual advantage. The Japanese team says that in the first act of copulation the penis may be used to remove any sperm left by any competitors that its partner has mated with. With the first penis and the rival sperm then abandoned, the second penis can be used to inject the sea slug with another dose of its own sperm, ensuring that their genes are the ones that are passed on.

Billionaires Secretly Funded Vast Climate Denial Network

Conservative billionaires used a secretive funding route to channel nearly $120 million to more than 100 groups casting doubt about the science behind climate change, the Guardian has learned. The funds, doled out between 2002 and 2010, helped build a vast network of think tanks and activist groups working to a single purpose: to redefine climate change from neutral scientific fact to a highly polarizing “wedge issue” for hardcore conservatives. The millions were routed through two trusts, Donors Trust and the Donors Capital Fund, operating out of a generic town house in the northern Virginia suburbs of Washington, DC. Donors Capital caters to those making donations of $1 million or more.

Dougal Dixon – Man After Man : An Anthropology of the Future (1990)

“The book begins with the impact of genetic engineering. For 200 years modern humans morphed the genetics of other humans to create genetically-altered creatures. The aquamorphs and aquatics are marine humans with gills instead of lungs. One species – the vacuumorph – has been engineered for life in the vacuum of space. Its skin and eyes carry shields of skin to keep its body stable even without pressure. Civilization eventually collapses, with a few select humans escaping to colonize space. The humans that manufactured these species degrade to simple farmers and following a magnetic reversal, were driven to extinction. Other humans, the Hitek, become almost totally dependent on cybernetic technology. With Magnetic reversal imminent, the Hitek built genetically altered humans to occupy niches: Genetically-altered humans include a temperate woodland species, a prairie species, a jungle species, and a tundra-dwelling species.

Teaching IBM’s Watson the meaning of ‘OMG’

Case in point: Two years ago, Brown attempted to teach Watson the Urban Dictionary. The popular website contains definitions for terms ranging from Internet abbreviations like OMG, short for “Oh, my God,” to slang such as “hot mess.” But Watson couldn’t distinguish between polite language and profanity — which the Urban Dictionary is full of. Watson picked up some bad habits from reading Wikipedia as well. In tests it even used the word “bullshit” in an answer to a researcher’s query. Ultimately, Brown’s 35-person team developed a filter to keep Watson from swearing and scraped the Urban Dictionary from its memory. But the trial proves just how thorny it will be to get artificial intelligence to communicate naturally. Brown is now training Watson as a diagnostic tool for hospitals. No knowledge of OMG required.

Crooks Net Millions in Coordinated ATM Heists

Organized cyber criminals stole almost $11 million in two highly coordinated ATM heists in the final days of 2012, KrebsOnSecurity has learned. Using a small number of re-loadable prepaid debit cards tied to accounts that they controlled, scammers began pulling cash out of ATMs in at least a dozen countries. Within hours, the perpetrators had stolen approximately $9 million. Then, just prior to New Year’s Eve, the fraudsters struck again, this time attacking a card network in India and making off with slightly less than $2 million, investigators say. The accounts that the perpetrators used to withdraw money from ATMs were tied to re-loadable prepaid debit cards, which can be replenished with additional funds once de…

Photos in the Belgian press showed the men dressed in full Nazi regalia with a Hasidic Jewish boy character on a rail car, decorated with posters depicting pails labeled, “Zyklon,” the chemical used in the Nazi gas chambers.

For $7500, the engineers lashed together a mobile ultrahigh-frequency (UHF) high-power noise source that they could use to jam satellite antennas or military UHF receivers. “It’s just like turning your radio up louder than someone else’s,” Marceau says.

A Drug Recall That Should Frighten Us All About The FDA

And this wasn’t just a problem with one batch – this is a problem that has been going on with this particular drug for four or five years, and the FDA did everything it could to ignore it. The FDA apparently approved this drug – and others like it – without testing it. The FDA just assumed if one dosage strength the drug companies submitted for approval works, then the other higher dosages work fine also. With this generic, American consumers became the FDA’s guinea pigs to see if the FDA’s assumption was right. It wasn’t.

Food Cravings – The Truth Behind The “Mystery”

The fact of the matter is that food cravings are very important biochemical indicators that inform us when our body actually needs a particular nutrient. The thing is, most people (including ourselves) struggle to identify the true implication of the craving(s). Most of us live in the reality that “pre-packaged foods” are now considered an important part of a balanced diet; we also believe that they offer the same nutrient content as a food substance that has not been adulterated or reconstituted. By existing in this reality, we set ourselves up for failure. The truth is, there is hope! We just have to harness our energies by discerning the body’s cries for “real food”. In order to simplify your life a bit, we have found a table outlining the most common “food cravings”, the missing nutrients associated with those cravings, and which foods you can ingest to take corrective action in fulfilling your body’s need to function.

Big letters have been placed on the overpass at the Packard Automotive Plant in Detroit that read in German “Work will make you Free,” concerning some metro Detroiters, given the resemblance to an infamous sign at the Nazi concentration camp in Auschwitz. It’s unclear who put up the letters. In capital red letters on a white background, the new sign at the decaying site on Detroit’s east side reads: “Arbeit Macht Frei,” the exact same words at the entrance to the concentration camps in Poland where Jews were forced to work and were murdered. The sign, which was used at other Nazi camps, became well known as an international symbol of cruelty.

‘Racism’ of early colour photography explored in art exhibition

Broomberg and Chanarin say their work, on show at Johannesburg’s Goodman Gallery, examines “the radical notion that prejudice might be inherent in the medium of photography itself”. They argue that early colour film was predicated on white skin: in 1977, when Jean-Luc Godard was invited on an assignment to Mozambique, he refused to use Kodak film on the grounds that the stock was inherently “racist”. The light range was so narrow, Broomberg said, that “if you exposed film for a white kid, the black kid sitting next to him would be rendered invisible except for the whites of his eyes and teeth”. It was only when Kodak’s two biggest clients – the confectionary and furniture industries – complained that dark chocolate and dark furniture were losing out that it came up with a solution.

While passage this year could be a longshot, lawmakers from both parties have been quietly working on several bills, the first of which Democratic Reps. Earl Blumenauer of Oregon and Jared Polis of Colorado plan to introduce Tuesday, Blumenauer told The Associated Press. Polis’ measure would regulate marijuana the way the federal government handles alcohol: In states that legalize pot, growers would have to obtain a federal permit. Oversight of marijuana would be removed from the Drug Enforcement Administration and given to the newly renamed Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Marijuana and Firearms, and it would remain illegal to bring marijuana from a state where it’s legal to one where it isn’t.

Men who watched more than 20 hours of television a week had a sperm count 44 per cent lower than those who watched the least, it found.

✸ Could the U.S. Government Start Reading Your Emails?
It’s likely Anderson is not alone in her concerns that the government may be monitoring what Americans say, write, and read. And now there may be even more to worry about: a newly revealed security research project called PRODIGAL — the Proactive Discovery of Insider Threats Using Graph Analysis and Learning — which has been built to scan IMs, texts and emails . . . and can read approximately a quarter billion of them a day.
✸ Facebook Flaw Means Anyone Can See Private Photos
A surprising security hole in Facebook allows almost anyone to see pictures marked as private, an online forum revealed late Monday. Even pictures supposedly kept hidden from uninvited eyes by Facebook’s privacy controls aren’t safe, reported one user of a popular bodybuilding forum in a post entitled “I teach you how to view private Facebook photos.” Facebook appears to have acted quickly to eliminate the end-run around privacy controls, after word of the exploit spread across the Internet. It wasn’t long before one online miscreant uploaded private pictures of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg himself — evidence that the hack worked, he said.
✸ Kodak’s long fade to black
Kodak Brownie and Instamatic cameras were once staples of family vacations and holidays — remember the “open me first” Christmas ad campaigns? But it may not be long before a generation of Americans grows up without ever having laid hands on a Kodak product. That’s a huge comedown for a brand that was once as globally familiar as Coca-Cola. It’s hard to think of a company whose onetime dominance of a market has been so thoroughly obliterated by new technology. Family snapshots? They’re almost exclusively digital now, and only a tiny fraction ever get printed on paper. Eastman Kodak engineers invented the digital camera in 1975; but now that you can point and click with a cheap cellphone, even the stand-alone digital camera is becoming an endangered species on the consumer electronics veld. The last spool of yellow-boxed Kodachrome rolled out the door of a Mexican factory in 2009.
✸ Greenpeace penetrates French nuclear plant
Greenpeace activists secretly entered a French nuclear site before dawn and draped a banner reading “Coucou” and “Facile”, (meaning “Hey” and “Easy”) on its reactor containment building, to expose the vulnerability of atomic sites in the country. Police, whom the environmental activist group immediately told of the publicity stunt, took several hours to round up nine intruders who had broken into the power plant in Nogent-sur-Seine, about 95km southeast of Paris, on Monday. Greenpeace said the break-in aimed to show that an ongoing review of safety measures, ordered by French authorities after a tsunami ravaged Japan’s Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant earlier this year, was focused too narrowly on possible natural disasters, and not human factors.
✸ ‘Human Zoos’ go on show in Paris
“Exhibitions: the invention of the savage”, at the Quai Branly museum, shows how up until the mid-20th century, labelling indigenous peoples of Africa, Asia, Oceania and America “savages” helped to justify the brutality of colonial rule. Former football star Lilian Thuram, who was born on the French Caribbean island Guadeloupe, is chief curator of the show. He told AFP he was stunned by a visit to Hamburg zoo in Germany. “At the entrance there are animal sculptures, but also ones of Indians and Africans — letting visitors know they are going to see not just animals but human beings as well,” he said. “They are still there today.” In 1931, the grandparents of another French footballer, Christian Karembeu, were put on display at the Jardin d’Acclimation in Paris, then in Germany, along with around 100 other New Caledonian Kanaks, cast as “cannibals”.
✸ Seattle welfare recipient lives in million-dollar home
A Seattle woman who is receiving welfare assistance from Washington state also happens to live in a waterfront house on Lake Washington worth more than a million dollars. Federal agents raided the home this weekend but have not released the woman or her husband’s name because they have not officially been charged with a crime. However, federal documents obtained by KING 5 News show the couple currently receives more than $1,200 a month in public housing vouchers, plus state and government disability checks and food stamps. They have been receiving the benefits since 2003. The 2,500 square-foot home, which includes gardens and a boat dock, is valued at $1.2 million. And even though the couple has been receiving the benefits for nearly 10 years, records show that they accurately listed the address of their current home when applying for the state and federal benefits.
✸ Fury as Virgin Megastore recommends Hitler’s Mein Kampf
The music, entertainment and media retailer came under fire as pictures have been circling the internet of a ‘Virgin Recommends’ book shelf with Adolf Hitler’s Mein Kampf for sale and published in Arabic. Virgin recommended the book in its store in the Landmark Shopping Centre in Doha. It has since taken it off the shelves. Charlie Gandelman took the picture and then posted it on Twitter after he was alerted to it by his friend Anna Peregrini.
✸ Ex-Pro wrestler Andre Davis ‘Gangsta of Love’ convicted of 14 felonious assault counts in HIV case
A jury on Wednesday convicted a former professional wrestler of 14 felonious assault counts alleging he had sex with women without telling them he had tested positive for the virus that causes AIDS. Hamilton County jurors deliberated over two days before returning the verdict against Andre Davis, of Cincinnati. Prosecutors said the 29-year-old Davis, who wrestled using stage names including Gangsta of Love, Sweet Sexy Sensation and Andre Heart, violated state law by not telling a dozen sex partners about his HIV status or lying to them. Davis’ attorney, Greg Cohen, told WLWT-TV he would appeal the verdict. He said the state law regarding HIV and felonious assault is poorly written because it doesn’t require proof that there has been “harm or an attempt to commit harm.”
✸ Architecture of Fear – a conversation with Trevor Paglen
For his Limit Telephotography series, Paglen used high powered telescopes to picture the “black” sites, a series of secret locations operated by the CIA. Often outside of U.S. territory and legal jurisdiction, these locations do not officially exist, they range from American torture camps in Afghanistan to front companies running airlines whose purpose is to covertly move suspects around.
✸ Planet like Earth found in star’s habitable zone
Scientists and their Kepler spacecraft have discovered for the first time a planet in distant space that is much like Earth, circling a sun-like star and lying in a region neither too hot nor too cold for an atmosphere that could support some form of life. The temperature on that planet, the scientists say, probably is a comfortable 72 degrees, rain or shine. The planet, whose discovery was announced Monday at NASA’s Ames Research Center in Mountain View, was first detected by NASA’s Kepler spacecraft two years ago, shortly after it began surveying 155,000 stars in the constellations Cygnus and Lyra.
✸ U.S. Drug Agents Launder Profits of Mexican Cartels
Undercover American narcotics agents have laundered or smuggled millions of dollars in drug proceeds as part of Washington’s expanding role in Mexico’s fight against drug cartels, according to current and former federal law enforcement officials. The agents, primarily with the Drug Enforcement Administration, have handled shipments of hundreds of thousands of dollars in illegal cash across borders, those officials said, to identify how criminal organizations move their money, where they keep their assets and, most important, who their leaders are. They said agents had deposited the drug proceeds in accounts designated by traffickers, or in shell accounts set up by agents.
✸ Scientists trying to clone, resurrect extinct mammoth
A team of scientists from Japan, Russia and the United States hopes to clone a mammoth, a symbol of Earth’s ice age that ended 12,000 years ago, according to a report in Japan’s Yomiuri Shimbun. The researchers say they hope to produce a baby mammoth within six years. The scientists say they will extract DNA from a mammoth carcass that has been preserved in a Russian laboratory and insert it into the egg cells of an African elephant in hopes of producing a mammoth embryo.
✸ How the Food Industry Eats Your Kid’s Lunch
An increasingly cozy alliance between companies that manufacture processed foods and companies that serve the meals is making students — a captive market — fat and sick while pulling in hundreds of millions of dollars in profits. At a time of fiscal austerity, these companies are seducing school administrators with promises to cut costs through privatization. Parents who want healthier meals, meanwhile, are outgunned.
✸ German neo-Nazi gang ‘developed Monoploy-style game with death camps’
Called “Pogromly” and intended for other far-right extremists the game has the names of four Nazi concentration camps instead of the railway stations found on the traditional Monopoly board. Players have the chance to buy Auschwitz, Dachau, Buchenwald and Ravensbruck, with each camp costing 4,000 reichsmarks, the currency used in Hitler’s Germany. A number of sets of the game were discovered in a garage used by the gang the self-styled National Socialist Underground amongst bomb-making equipment and unused nail bombs last month. Players start on a square emblazoned with a swastika and also have the chance of landing on a numbers of squares marked with the SS emblem. The board also comes with pictures of Hitler and sinister looking Jews.
Indian state trades gifts for sterilisation
India has 1.2 billion people and is fast catching up with China as the world’s most populous nation. In an attempt to slow down the baby boom the state of Rajasthan, home to 68 million people, is offering prizes in exchange for sterilisation. Now women can win anything from food processors to cars if they undergo the knife. This latest effort has raised controversy as the procedure is is still viewed with suspicion after the government introduced a forced sterilization program the 1970s.
✸ The digital future of narcotics
Technologists will become the next drug dealers, administering narcotics through brain stimulation, according to Rohit Talwar, the founder of Fast Future Research speaking at Intelligence Squared’s If conference. Talwar was charged by the government to investigate the drugs landscape over the next 20 years, exploring scenarios going beyond the traditional model of gangs producing and shipping drugs around the world. He described how the world of genomic sequencing and services such as 23 and Me open up possibilities for tailoring drugs to the individual, delivering effects based on your physiology — which could apply just as effectively to narcotics as it could medicines.
✸ Nude Suspect Viewing Child Porn Before Arrest
Acting on a tip, authorities went Thursday morning to the home of 63-year-old Thomas Davis in the 2000 block of Westwood Northern Boulevard. Deputies said Davis answered the door in the nude, and they escorted him inside to retrieve some clothing. Investigators said they saw obvious child pornography images scrolling on a computer monitor inside the apartment, and Davis was arrested.
✸ Selah School District settles termination agreement of Selah Jr. High teacher
On October 13, Selah Police began an investigation of McMillen after a student discovered a camera hidden under a desk in his classroom. Police told KIMA they believed the camera had been hidden with the intent to look up girls’ skirts.
✸ Public high school teacher starred in porno movies released last year
Kevin Hogan is an English teacher and crew coach at a top-rated Massachusetts public high school, but he brings some unusual experience to the job: until recently, he was starring in pornographic movies. Hogan has worked at the Mystic Valley Regional Charter School in Malden since September. In addition to his coaching and teaching duties, he also chairs the high school’s English department. But he can also be found on the Internet and in adult entertainment stores under his screen name: Hytch Cawke. His movie credits include “Fetish World” and “Just Gone Gay 8,” and FOX Undercover found his third movie, whose title is not fit to reveal in a family news outlet, in a local adult store. It features him answering an ad to have sex for money.
✸ Weta insect: Heaviest in the world weighs 3 times more than a mouse
A nature-lover has revealed how he spent two days tracking down a giant insect on a remote New Zealand island – and got it to eat a carrot out of his hand. Mark Moffett’s find is the world’s biggest insect in terms of weight, which at 71g is heavier than a sparrow and three times that of a mouse. The 53-year-old former park ranger discovered the giant weta up a tree and his real life Bug’s Bunny has now been declared the largest ever found.
✸ Druggiest Colleges in U.S.: Colorado, Denison, Dartmouth, Kenyon, More
From study enhancers to bong rips, American colleges remain a hotbed for illegal drug experimentation. The Daily Beast finds the 30 institutions of higher learning where students experiment the most. The college experience is all about stepping out of your comfort zone and trying new things. For some college students, that includes experimenting with drugs, from Adderall to acid to marijuana. It’s no wonder, then, that the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy singled out university students as a group particularly prone to drug abuse in its latest strategy report. “Reducing substance use behaviors among college students requires prevention strategies at the college or university as well as in the surrounding off-campus community,” according to the White House report.

The World Collapses Around You

  • One document set reveals that even after TSA employees identified cancer clusters possibly linked to radiation exposure, the agency failed to issue employees dosimeters – safety devices that could assess the level of radiation exposure. Another document indicates that the DHS mischaracterized the findings of the National Institute of Standards and Technology, stating that NIST “affirmed the safety” of full body scanners. The documents obtained by EPIC reveal that NIST disputed that characterization and stated that the Institute did not, in fact, test the devices. Also, a Johns Hopkins University study revealed that radiation zones around body scanners could exceed the “General Public Dose Limit.”
  • Nearly half of all American high school students smoke, drink alcohol, or use illicit drugs, according to a new report. And one in four who started using these substances before they turned 18 may become addicts.

One-quarter of people in the U.S. who began using drugs or alcohol before age 18 meet the criteria for drug or alcohol addiction, compared with one of 25 Americans who started using drugs or alcohol when they were 21 or older, according to the report by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University in New York City.

  • Rock’s rowdiest icon rages on about drugs, sex, rehab, plutocrats, Kurt Cobain, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Pamela Anderson’s ass.
  • In fact, intoxication with psychoactive drugs is not an exclusively human proclivity. Animals in the wild will also voluntarily and repeatedly consume psychoactive plants and fungi. Birds, elephants, and monkeys have all been reported to enthusiastically seek out fruits and berries that have fallen to the ground and undergone natural fermentation to produce alcohol. In Gabon, which lies in the western equatorial region of Africa, boars, elephants, porcupines, and gorillas have all been reported to consume the intoxicating, hallucinogenic iboga plant (Tabernanthe iboga). There is even some evidence that young elephants learn to eat iboga from observing the actions of their elders in the social group. In the highlands of Ethiopia, goats cut the middleman out of the Starbucks business model by munching wild coffee berries and catching a caffeine buzz.
  • American pop star Lady Gaga is accused of misrepresenting charitable donations from wristbands sold to benefit tsunami and earthquake victims in Japan earlier this year.

The complaint, filed in a Michigan court on Friday by 1800lawfirm, says the star as well as her record label, Universal Music Group, and the Bravado International Group, lacked transparency surrounding the amount of money that was raised from sales of the wristbands and whether those funds were 100 per cent allocated to earthquake and tsunami victims.

After the earthquake and tsunami disasters in March 2011 that devastated Japan, Lady Gaga created the rubber wristbands and the singer’s website advertised that all proceeds from sales of the wristband would benefit victims.

The white rubber bracelets were sold for dollar 5 and inscribed in red with the phrase, “We pray for Japan,” in English and Japanese.

  • “Arbeit Macht Frei” is a German phrase meaning “work brings freedom” or “work shall set you free/will free you” or “work liberates” and, literally in English; “work makes free”. It became the unofficial slogan of Nazi concentration camps as the prisoners would enter the camps they would see the black wrought iron sign.

Unicor is a U.S. government corporation of Federal Prison industries whose purpose is to train and educate prisoners. This is not the old convict chain gang cutting grass or picking up trash or making license plates.

  • A CHICAGO woman is accused of strapping her baby’s corpse into a sling and taking him shopping after killing the three-month old in a drunken rage, local media reported on Wednesday.

Ken Blackman Jr had been dead for eight to 14 hours when the woman wrapped up her shopping trip and went to visit a neighbour, who noticed blood on the baby blanket and called 911.

  • Police in Fall River, Massachusetts are investigating the death of 36-year-old Marie Joseph after her body was discovered floating in the Veterans Memorial Pool at Lafayette Park Tuesday.

She was pulled from the water and taken to a local hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

“I’m surprised she did go to the pool because she doesn’t even know how to swim,” said Dee Reid, one of the victim’s friends.

Authorities are trying to determine if she had been in the water since Sunday and no one saw her body under the 12 feet of water.

  • A Kansas City, Missouri, man faces felony sexual assault charges after he allegedly raped a woman on a city sidewalk in broad daylight.

According to police, Melvin L. Jackson, 49, allegedly had sex with the unconscious woman on a sidewalk outside of a vacant business at 3400 Troost around 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning.

Two witnesses who flagged down a patrol car say that they saw the woman curled up in a fetal position, with Jackson on top of her with his pants and underwear around his ankles, having sex with her.

When Kansas City Missouri Police arrived on the scene, authorities say that Jackson told them, “I thought that lady was dead.”

  • A nuclear power station in eastern Scotland had to shut down its reactors after “high volumes” of jellyfish were found on its seawater filter screens, the operating company said Thursday.

“Both units at Torness power station were manually shut down on 28 June, due to the high volumes of jelly fish fouling the cooling water screens,” said a statement from EDF Energy, which runs the power station near Dunbar.

  • So all things considered, MySpace has cost Murdoch’s empire something like $1.3 billion. Even if my assumptions are way off, the final cost can’t be less than $1 billion. That fiasco isn’t putting Murdoch out of business: News Corp turned a $2.9 billion dollar profit in the last four quarters and generated $2.2 billion in free cash flow, for example. But it still stings as Murdoch’s dreams of an end-to-end interactive media empire falls apart. And his shareholders have been trailing the broader market as well as rivals Viacom and Disney over those five painful years.

Butt Bombers

    • Purported to be translations of English-language books by prisoners in concentration camps, these books were highly pornographic accounts of imprisonment, generally of Allied soldiers, sexual brutalization by female SS guards, and the prisoners’ eventual revenge, which usually consisted of the rape and murder of their tormentors. The books, with titles like I Was Colonel Schultz’s Private Bitch, were especially popular among adolescent boys, often the children of concentration camp survivors.
    • In addition to finding 10 tons of marijuana and a small arsenal of weapons (which included one missile), there was also a crude homemade mural of Bieber that read “One Time” below it. It’s probably the strangest place Bieber has shown up, but it’s proof positive that the 16-year-old Canadian singer is indeed a worldwide phenomenon.
    • Yet with this, the developers must not have taken into account the BlackBerry Simulation Software, which for all intents and purposes is a fully functional device for the desktop yet purely for simulating the phone and testing applications. It can be used to spoof your Facebook Places and Twitter status locations. What if you wanted just half an hour’s privacy from your partner to buy them the perfect gift? Or how about fooling your friends and appearing somewhere when you physically couldn’t be ‘for a bit of a laugh’? Why not while you’re at it give yourself an alibi to allow you to commit crime? Or skip work for the day and say you’re going to the doctors when in fact you’re out shopping 20 miles away?
    • Mikalah uses Facebook but when she goes to log out, she deactivates her Facebook account. She knows that this doesn’t delete the account – that’s the point. She knows that when she logs back in, she’ll be able to reactivate the account and have all of her friend connections back. But when she’s not logged in, no one can post messages on her wall or send her messages privately or browse her content. But when she’s logged in, they can do all of that. And she can delete anything that she doesn’t like. Michael Ducker calls this practice “super-logoff” when he noticed a group of gay male adults doing the exact same thing.
    • The concept is simple. Rather than sew explosives into his underwear, a terrorist might actually plant a bomb, which can weigh as little as a pound, inside his anal cavity. Like drug mules, would-be butt bombers could store the explosives inside a condom. Sound crazy? Perhaps. Disgusting? Definitely. But security experts initially believed that a terrorist’s derriere nearly killed a top Saudi Arabian counterterrorism official last fall. Back in August, an Al Qaeda-connected militant named Abdullah Assiri offered to turn himself into Saudi authorities and enlist in a state-run terrorist rehabilitation program. Exhibiting a healthy skepticism, the Saudis reportedly subjected Assiri to two airport-style X-ray scans and other security checks. Finding no weapons or explosives on his body, security agents ushered Assiri into the palace of the counterterrorism chief, Prince Muhammad Bin Nayef, who is also the son of a likely heir to the Saudi throne.
