A Roane County woman who died after taking two doses of LSD could be the first reported acid-related fatality in the state and one of the few documented globally. Prosecutors are still awaiting toxicology results to make that distinction. An autopsy hasn’t been completed on Renee Honaker, 30, of Left Hand, who died last week. Lab results for the acid strips she allegedly took aren’t back yet either, Roane County Prosecuting Attorney Josh Downey said on Saturday. Police charged Renee’s husband, Todd Anthony Honaker, 34, with first-degree murder after the couple apparently each took two hits of LSD on March 1. Renee later fell to the floor, began convulsing and died. Police also charged Chad M. Renzelman, 32, of Kennewick, Wash., the chemist they said manufactured the drug, with first-degree murder. He is being held in jail awaiting extradition to West Virginia.

Diane Shattuck filled a prescription in December for a generic antibiotic called doxycycline. With insurance, she paid $4.30 for 60 pills at a CVS store in Orange. She returned at the end of February to refill her prescription. This time, she was told her cost for the drug would be about $165. “It was bizarre,” Shattuck, 73, told me. “And no one at CVS could explain why the price was so high.” Unfortunately, I won’t be able to offer a clear-cut answer, either. But my effort to untangle Shattuck’s situation cast a harsh light on the shadowy world of drug pricing. It revealed that different manufacturers can charge wildly different prices for what is essentially the same generic medicine, and that drugstores can rake in unconscionable profits by passing along marked-up meds to customers without the slightest explanation. “It’s a very murky world,” said Jeffrey McCombs, a professor of pharmaceutical economics and policy at USC.

Even if the user is not recording video, audio for their own use it may still be being collected and processed in the cloud in order to display contextual information using image, object, face, voice identification and speech recognition. (so called augmented reality) for example. Display the G+ or Facebook profile of the person you are looking at.

With the help of some friends, Tomb created “Maria del Camino.” She’s an excavator topped with a 1959 El Camino, mounted on a hydraulic array that lifts it high off the ground. Her body is adorned with thousands of drilled-out holes, and her hood sports a portrait of the robot woman from Fritz Lang’s Metropolis, which shines when the light hits it. In simple terms, it’s nothing but sheer magnificence. Maria is currently being worked on at the DIY space Nimby in Oakland California. We stopped by to ask Tomb how — and why — he built his “flying” car, and he took us for a beer run, stopping traffic along the way. As for future modifications, Tomb has a big one in mind. “Been working on removing the manual controls,” he says. “I’ve heard driverless cars are all the rage!”

The Portage County Sheriff’s Department said Darlene Flatoff will be evicted from her Birch Tree Estates home in Plover within the next 10 days after health officials discovered the woman has been keeping more than 300 rats loose in her home since March of last year and possibly longer, the Wausau Daily Herald reported Thursday. Officials said the rodents and their droppings are posing a health risk. They said Flatoff bought her first rats from pet stores and they eventually reproduced with wild rats.

. . Octopus On Dolphin’s Genitals (PHOTOS): The tentacled hitchhiker was attached to the dolphin’s genital slit. Photographer Joan Gonzalvo isn’t sure what the octopus was up to, though he told New Scientist that perhaps the dolphin tried to eat the octopus and the animal lodged itself along the dolphin’s genital slit to escape. The dolphin may have been leaping from the water to detach its uninvited guest, Gonzalvo, the project manager of the Ionian Dolphin Project, wrote on the organization’s blog. ► Japan Fukushima Nuclear Crisis Called ‘Man-Made’: The nuclear accident at Fukushima was a preventable disaster rooted in government-industry collusion and the worst conformist conventions of Japanese culture, a parliamentary inquiry concluded on Thursday. The report, released by the Fukushima Nuclear Accident Independent Investigation Commission, challenged some of the main story lines that the government and the operator of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant have put forward. Most notably, the report said the plant’s crucial cooling systems might have been damaged in the earthquake on March 11, 2011, not only in the ensuing tsunami. That caution raises doubts about the safety of all the quake-prone country’s nuclear plants just as they begin tto restart after a pause ordered in the wake of the Fukushima crisis.

By analyzing wastewater at treatment plants or at strategic spots throughout sewer systems, scientists can run extraordinarily accurate and anonymous tests on an entire population without ever asking anyone to hand over a cup of urine. If, say, Philadelphia implements an ad campaign against methamphetamine, officials could gauge levels of the drug in the wastewater to instantly see if it’s working. ► Allergic to Meat: ‘Lone Star Tick’ May Be Spreading Vegetarianism: A bite from the lone star tick, so-called for the white spot on its back, looks innocent enough. But University of Virginia researchers say saliva that sneaks into the tiny wound may trigger an allergic reaction to meat — agonizing enough to convert lifelong carnivores into wary vegetarians. “People will eat beef and then anywhere from three to six hours later start having a reaction; anything from hives to full-blown anaphylactic shock,” said Dr. Scott Commins, assistant professor of medicine at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. “And most people want to avoid having the reaction, so they try to stay away from the food that triggers it.”

► Beer company pulls pro-public urination billboard: A beer company has yanked ads in two cities that appears to have encouraged public urination. Mexican beer brand Tecate took down billboards in Los Angeles and San Francisco after The Tens Tumblr page first spotted the billboard with an the image of a tree and the Spanish word for “bathroom”—along with the suggestion that life is easier for guys.
► Man Returned Used Enemas To CVS Regularly: Eventually, in early June, employee Dustin McDonald found it bizarre that the man — whom he recognized from previous visits — was again bringing back the same item, and decided to investigate, the Smoking Gun reported. He opened the box of enema bottles to find they were all filled with fluid. The box had apparently been re-glued to make it look like it hadn’t been opened. The curious employee then poked into other six-pack enema boxes on the shelf and discovered that ““all the enemas in each of the 3 boxes were previously used,” according to the Smoking Gun. Each of these containers was similarly re-glued shut.

► Guy gets electrocuted on 3rd rail in NYC 34th street train [Video]: MANHATTAN — A man was killed on the subway tracks in Herald Square Sunday night after falling onto the electrified third rail, authorities said. The victim, described as being in his 20s, fell on the third rail of the F train at the 34th Street-Herald Square station shortly before 10 p.m., the NYPD said. He was pronounced dead at the scene. ► ‘UFO’ at the bottom of the Baltic Sea ‘cuts off electrical equipment when divers get within 200m’: The divers exploring a ‘UFO-shaped’ object at the bottom of the Baltic Sea say their equipment stops working when they approach within 200m. Professional diver Stefan Hogerborn, part of the Ocean X team which is exploring the anomaly, said some of the team’s cameras and the team’s satellite phone would refuse to work when directly above the object, and would only work once they had sailed away. He is quoted as saying: ‘Anything electric out there – and the satellite phone as well – stopped working when we were above the object. ‘And then we got away about 200 meters and it turned on again, and when we got back over the object it didn’t work.’
► Photos Of A Massive Chinese-Built Ghost Town In Africa: There’s been a lot written about ghost towns in China. Now, state-owned China International Trust and Investment Corporation (CITIC) has built a town in Angola. And it’s fairly empty. Just outside Angola’s capital city of Luanda is Nova Cidade de Kilamba a residential development of 750 eight-story apartment buildings, a dozen schools, and more than 100 retail units, reports the BBC’s Louise Redvers.
► OraQuick At-Home H.I.V. Test Wins F.D.A. Approval: After decades of controversy, the Food and Drug Administration approved a new H.I.V. test on Tuesday that for the first time makes it possible for Americans to learn in the privacy of their homes whether they are infected. The availability of an H.I.V. test as easy to use as a home-pregnancy kit is yet another step in the normalization of a disease that was once seen as a mark of shame and a death sentence. The OraQuick test, by OraSure Technologies, uses a mouth swab and gives results in 20 to 40 minutes. A previous test sold over the counter required a user to prick a finger and mail a drop of dried blood to a lab.
► US Coast Guard creates ‘protest-free zone’ in Alaska oil drilling zone: The United States Coast Guard will establish and enforce “a 500-meter safety zone” around the Shell Oil Company’s drilling vessel Noble Discoverer as it drills exploratory offshore wells in the sensitive Arctic waters off the coast of Alaska beginning this July. The ‘buffer zone’ would apply to all vessels, but the ‘special rules’ are clearly designed to make it more difficult for those trying to protest against the Shell’s oil drilling in the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas this summer. “For any group or individual intending to conduct lawful demonstrations in the vicinity of the Noble Discoverer,” reads the USCG memo, “These demonstrations must be conducted outside the safety zone.” While acknowledging the negative impact on the “environment and indigenous people” a mid-ocean collision caused by environmental activists attempting to block or board the ship could have in the Arctic, the USCG report made no mention of what impact a massive oil spill in the area would have on the same.
